Classic Racing and Family Fun. Autum Festival at the Curragh
The Autumn Festival of Racing taking place at the Curragh on 11th and 12th September combines exceptional racing with great fashion, food and fun over two days.
The Irish Field St Leger takes centre stage on Saturday with some of Europe’s top middle distance performers battling for success in the final Classic race of the year. Potential runners include Ascot Gold Cup hero Rite of Passage, Profound Beauty, Melbourne Cup runner up Pop Rock, recent Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner San Frontieres and the Godolphin owned Kitwood. The Group 1 contest is established as one of the premier trial races in the world for the Emirates Melbourne Cup and there will be an opportunity for one lucky person to win a holiday of a lifetime to attend Australia’s greatest race. The Group 1 National Stakes and the inaugural running of the Curragh Amateur Riders Derby will also be part of a star studded line up.
Saturday of the Festival is now established as one of the most fashionable days in the Autumn racing calendar. Think “Absolutely Fabulous” as the association with one of the world’s premier champagne brands has risen the profile of the day, whereby it is now an important date in the social diary. Bollinger in conjunction with K Club will present some exciting prizes to the ladies judged to be wearing the Most Stylish Hats on the day.
Sunday is the ultimate family race day with top class racing featuring the Group 2 Blandford Stakes combined with lots of free activities for young children courtesy of K Bowl, including giant WII games, face paintings, reptile zoo, live music from Johnny Peters and free candy floss. There will be a strong sporting theme to include exhibition games with children from sports clubs, while there will be a re-enactment by Royston Boxing Club of the historic boxing match between Dan Donnelly and George Cooper which took place on the Curragh in 1815.
The Curragh in association with the Independent Brewers and Distillers of Ireland has brought together some of Ireland’s finest micro brewers to showcase their products in order to create a special event as part of the Festival. This will take place over both days in the new Garden Enclosure close to the parade ring. The Thorough-Brew Festival will give anyone attending the races the opportunity to purchase and sample a variety of great beers. Some of those taking place include the Porterhouse from Dublin, White Gypsy from County Tipperary, Franciscan Well from Cork, the Galway Hooker, Hilden Brewery from Belfast, Dungarvan Brewing company from County Waterford, Trouble Brewing from County Kildare, Craigavon based Clanconnell Brewing, Carlow Brewing company, Beoir Corca Dhuibhne Brewing Company from Gaeltacht in Co. Kerry, together with Double L Cider, Bunratty Mead and whiskey from the well famous Cooley Distillery.
The Curragh Racecourse in association with Horse Racing Ireland will celebrate the magnificent achievements of HRI’s 2010 Flat Ambassador Michael Kinane by staging an exhibition of his racing successes taking place in the Bollinger Champagne Bar. Kinane is the only jockey who can claim wins in all the major European Group Ones as well as in the Belmont Stakes, the Breeders’ Cup, the Japan Cup, the Hong Kong Cup and the Melbourne Cup. This exhibition will honour Kinane’s many successes over three decades with a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a magnificent collection of memorabilia which will highlight his legendary career.
Laughing Lashes set for Moyglare Stud Stakes
Laughing Lashes could test the water at the highest level on her next start following a stylish victory in the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The grey headed into the Group Two contest on the back of two narrow defeats but opened her account in impressive style under Fran Berry.
Her trainer Jessica Harrington was thrilled with that performance and is considering the Moyglare Stud Stakes as her next objective, for which she would have to be supplemented at a cost of €23,500.
“She has come out of the race absolutely fine and is out in the field enjoying herself this morning,” said the Co Kildare handler.
“She seems to be improving all the time and I think that little bit of cut in the ground they had on Sunday helped her as she’s a big filly.
“We haven’t had a proper discussion yet but I am leaning towards supplementing her for the Moyglare (August 29).
“It would be another step up but she’s a Group Two winner now and has earned this step up.”
Looking ahead to next season, Harrington feels she could have a real Classic contender on her hands, but is keen not to get too far ahead of herself.
“I hope she could be a Guineas filly next season and maybe even an Oaks filly, as I do think she’d stay,” Harrington added.
“But we’ll take it all one day at a time with her. It’s still a long way off and we have to get through the winter yet.
“She does want a bit of cut in the ground so we’ll have to bear that in mind and maybe that would cause us to lean towards staying in Ireland.”
Zoffany wins Keeneland Phoenix Stakes
ZOFFANY was quoted at 8-1 for the 2,000 Guineas by William Hill after coming with a storming late run under Johnny Murtagh to mow down 4-9 favourite Strong Suit, who could finish only third behind the Aidan O'Brien-trained winner and Glor Na Mara
Richard Hughes, who had always been near the front aboard Strong Suit, tried to take control of the race with a furlong and a half to run, but was consistently harried by Glor Na Mara on his outside.
But it was 3-1 shot Zoffany, beaten eight and a quarter legnths by Strong Suit in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, who burst between the two leaders inside the final furlong and went clear to win byhalf a length, leaving Glor Na Mara only able to overhaul the Richard Hannon-trained favourite for second.
Strong Suit, a general 5-1 and 6-1 chance for the Guineas before this defeat, was quoted by Paddy Power at 12-1 for the Newmarket Classic, while prices for Glor Na Mara, trained by Jim Bolger, ranged from 10-1 to 20-1.
O'Brien, who has won 11 of the past 13 Phoenix Stakes, said of Zoffany: "He was very babyish at Ascot and his two races since have taught him a lot. All the time he's getting heavier and he's thriving on his racing so we'll keep him going.
"The Group 1 National Stakes [September 11] could be next, but we'll take it step by step. He's got seven furlongs easily twice, so a mile wouldn't be a problem."
Murtagh added: "He was too keen at Ascot and his last runs have taught him how to settle. He did it well today - the good pace suited him and he got a lovely run."
Richard Hannon jnr said of the beaten favourite: "Of course it's a bit disappointing and he hasn't confirmed the Coventry form over the winner. I thought looking at the race, he was in trouble a furlong out.
"We got beaten, but we'll get him home and scope him to see if there's anything wrong."
Jim Bolger, trainer of the runner-up, said: "I was very pleased. It was a very good run considering he's a novice. There's no immediate plans, but we'relooking at the Dewhurst [October 16] as an end-of-season target."
FAME AND GLORY, absent since winning the Investec Coronation Cup at thestart of June, returned to action with a comfortable victory in the Group 2 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The Montjeu colt was winning for the fourth consecutive time this season and came clear of his four rivals to lead home a one-two-three for trainer Aidan O'Brien.
Despite the ease of his success, Fame And Glory was left unchanged for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc deTriomphe - his main target for the rest of the season - at Longchamp on October 3.
Paddy Power left him at 5-2 and Stan James remained 3-1, although he heads both firm's betting after the career-threatening injury former Arc favourite Harbinger suffered on Saturday.
O'Brien, however, was pleased with thedisplay, saying: "That was just great - just what he needed after his mid-summer break."
O'Brien, who was winning the Royal Whip for the seventh time, added: "The choices now are the Irish Champion Stakes [September 4] or the Prix Foy [September 12]. We'll see which races fits best.
"The Arc has always been on the horizon, but we'll take each race as it comes."
Ridden by Johnny Murtagh, who partnered the O'Brien-trained Spin to win the opener at the Curragh on Sunday, Fame And Glory raced in third place with stablemates Dixie Music and Grand Admiral setting a decent gallop up front.
He was never extended in picking that pair up, returning the 1-12 favourite, while Choose Me and Precious Gem failed to make any impression after tracking Fame And Glory in the early part of the race.
Dixie Music, described before the race as Fame And Glory's "friend" by O'Brien, held on for second place at 66-1.
LAUGHING LASHES, trained by Jessica Harrington and ridden by Fran Berry, broke her maiden to land the Debutante Stakes by a length from the Aidan O'Brien-trained Misty For Me.
O'Brien was also responsible for the third, 6-4 favourite Together, who disappointed under Johnny Murtagh, hanging across the track and into the whip in the final furlong.
Winning trainer Jessica Harrington said: "We're absolutely delighted. The plan was to come up the middle so as not to get trapped. She did it very well and it's great to have the man in form Fran Berry on board - he's riding out of his skin at the moment.
"She'll possibly have one more run, but she'll have to be supplemented." Options could include the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on August 29 or the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp on Arc day in October.
Fran Berry, fresh from helping Ireland defend the Shergar Cup on Saturday and landing top jockey honours himself, jumped Laughing Lashes to anearly lead but she was swamped in the first furlong by the O'Brien runners Gemstone and Misty For Me, who were keen to ensure a strong pace.
Berry sat his mount alongside Murtagh and those sat off the pace struggled to get into it as the first three home were never out the first four.
The strong pace meant the jockeys were hard at work with two furlongs to go and while Murtagh had the favourite close enough, he never looked a threat to the winner, as she veered across the track. There was little Murtagh could do on Together as the two-time winner threw her race away.
Berry kept his mount straight and while having to battle to hold off Seamie Heffernan and Misty For Me inside the final furlong, he was always on top. The 5-1 shot, who was tipped by Tom Segal for Pricewise Extra members at 8-1, was workmanlike but impressive, earning quotes 16-1 for next year's 1,000 Guineas.

Air Chief Marshall wins wwwthetote.com Minstrel Stakes
AIR CHIEF MARSHAL made it two wins in a week when he powered to victory in the Group 3 Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday
The Aidan O'Brien-trained son of Danehill had gone 11 races without success before triumphing on the all-weather at Dundalk onMonday and he showed no signs of tiredness under Johnny Murtagh.
Tracking the pacemaking Duff, Air Chief Marshal, a 5-1 chance, took over with three furlongsto run and quickly had things sewn up.
Duff, who returned at 14-1, held on for second, while Totesport Victoria Cup winner Dandy Boy was third at 5-1.
Air Chief Marshal, whose win completed a double for Murtagh and O'Brien after Misty For Me's win in the opener at the Curragh, holds an entry in the Group 2 Totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood on August 28.

Snow Fairy wins Darley Irish Oaks
SNOW FAIRY put in an imperious performance in the Darley-sponsored Irish Oaks, streaking clear of her rivals in impressive fashion under a hands and heels ride from Ryan Moore, returning at 7-2.
Snow Fairy put eight lengths between herself and the Godolphin-owned 33-1 shot, Miss Jean Brodie, who won the battle for second on only her third career start under William Buick. Joseph O'Brien steered Lady Lupus, who returned at 66-1, home in third with Investec Oaks runner-up Meeznah only able to take fourth.
Ribblesdale winner Hibaayeb, who was sent off the 100-30 favourite for Frankie Dettori and Saeed Bin Suroor, was one of the first beaten, never looking dangerous and eased down with two furlongs to go before trailing home last.
Ice Empress, one of five runners for Aidan O'Brien, led the field along at a fierce early gallop, with usual front-runner Akdarena having to settle in behind. Lady Lupus and Meeznah, the eventual third and fourth, occupiedthose same positions in the early part of the race.
Snow Fairy jumped far more prominently than at Epsom but was reined back by Moore to sit in midfield alongside Dettori, fully fifteen lengths off Ice Empress. Johnny Murtagh held O'Brien first-string and Epsom Oaks third, Remember When, out the back of the field.
The field were content to sit off the strong early pace but the race changed complexion on the home turn with the strong pace taking it's toll and the majority of the field never getting competitive.
Moore, however, was travelling with consummate ease and, as those around him were hard at work, Moore surged clear on Snow Fairy. The same turn of foot that was so visually impressive at Epsom was demonstrated again on the Curragh as Snow Fairy opened up a gap on her pursuers in a matter of strides, continuing to pull away all the way to the line.
Speaking after the race, winning trainer Ed Dunlop, said: "We came here very confident of a good run as she'd definitely improved since Epsom, but we then became very worried when the rain came. She won really well and is a filly with a huge heart.
"She might go to the Yorkshire Oaks. I was successful in persuading her owner to supplement her for this and the Epsom Oaks, so I might try again for the Breeders' Cup."
Ryan Moore added: "She didn't give me as good a feel for most of the race compared to Epsom. Although she won easily she didn't appear to like the ground very much."
Miss Jean Brodie stayed on to grab second on the line from Lady Lupus, who duelled with Meeznah for the entirety of the home straight.
O'Brien said of Lady Lupus: "She ran a very good race and kept going when a lot of the others were stopping."
Bruce Raymond, racing manager to Meeznah's owners Saif Ali and Saeed H Altayer: "We were a bit apprehensive about the ground and she was labouring on it over the last couple of furlongs. She gets the trip well but not on that ground."
RYAN MOORE had a rare winner in the Sue Magnier colours when Latin Love landed the Listed Kilboy Estate Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday for trainer David Wachman.
With Johnny Murtagh taking the ride on the Aidan O'Brien-trained Famous, Moore was handed the ride on the comfortable 9-1 winner.
The three-time British champion always had last year's runner-up in a handy position before he made his move about a furlong and a half from home.
The winner responded well to repel the 7-2 favourite Emulous and the late challenge of top-weight She's Our Mark to record a length-and-a-quarter victory.
An impressed David Wachman said: "She likes a bit of ease in the ground and Ryan [Moore] was very good on her.
"There's a very good programme for a filly like her and we'll have a look at all the Listed and Group 3 fillies' races."
There was disappointment for Murtagh and O'Brien as Famous finished last of the 17 runners.
PATHFORK could be a name to remember, as the Jessica Harrington-trained colt made a pleasing debut in the opening 7f maiden at the Curragh.
The contest has produced a host of top-class performers, with Teofilo and New Approach among the winners in recent years.
Aidan O'Brien won the race last year with Black Quartz, but his odds-on favourite Robin Hood had no answer to Pathfork, who won by four lengths after looming large with a furlong to travel.
Paddy Power gave the winner a quote of 20-1 for next season's 2,000 Guineas, and the €230,000 purchase is evidently held in high regard by the yard, as a step into Group company could be next on the agenda.
Harrington said: "I was a bit worried about the ground but he handled it well and looked like he will stay a mile.
"We will have a look at the Futurity [Group 2 at Fairyhouse], and go from there.
"He's a nice horse and we have liked him all along, he's always been beating our better horses at home."
DUNBOYNE EXPRESS (9-2) preserved his unbeaten record with an emphatic dismantling of his three rivals in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes
Trained by Kevin Prendergast, the juvenile had defeated the odds-on Aidan O'Brien runner Master Of Hounds on his debut at Leopardstown last month, and again lowered the colours of a Ballydoyle representative, this time the even-money favourite Samuel Morse.
Declan McDonogh was content to sit to the outside of Murtagh and Samuel Morse, as Rudolf Valentino cut out the running against the stands' rail, with debutant Glor Na Mara completing the quartet.
With over two furlongs left Rudolf Valentino began to weaken, leaving the remaining trio all in contention with Glor Na Mara widest of all.
However, with a furlong to travel, McDonogh's mount began to stride out and, after heading Samuel Morse, the pair motored away eventually crossing the line eight lengths clear of the favourite.
Ladbrokes inserted Dunboyne Express at 20-1 for next season's 2,000 Guineas, with Paddy Power even more impressed with an opening show of 14-1.
There are plenty of options for the colt and trainer Kevin Prendergast said: "He's always shown he's a nice horse since the day we got him.
"He was very very green on debut at Leopardstown and has come on a lot since then. He probably likes ease in the ground and that will have helped him today.
"He in the National and Phoenix Stakes and we will go wherever there is a nice bit of ground."
BAY KNIGHT came from near last to first to land the Rockingham Handicap atodds of 12-1, getting up on the line to overhaul 8-1 shot Luisant.
There was controversy at the start with Lough Mist, who had already burst from the stalls in the preliminaries, appearing to get the jump on the field, coming out the stalls a length and a half to the good.
The four-year-old was quickly caught however, and swamped by the field, who were ledalong in the early stages by the eventual second and third, Luisant and Bajan Tryst, who returned at 12-1.
Declan McDonogh, who was completing a double afterlanding the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes on Dunboyne Express earlier on the card, sat off the early pace, though he was never far from the leaders with little more than four lengths covering the field.
With two furlongs to go, the strong-travelling Partner looked to make a race-winning move. However he faded badly in the final 50 yards toeventually finish fourth, with both Luisant and Bajan Tryst, who were gamely staying on, if a little one-paced, appearing to benefit from the fading leader.
The one-paced nature of those in front probably helped the fast-finishing Bay Knight, who swooped late to put his nose ahead in the shadows of the post.
A miserable day for Johnny Murtagh continued, as he was beaten on yet another favourite, finishing last.

Cape Blanco wins Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby
CAPE BLANCO led home an Aidan O'Brien-trained 1-2-3 in the Irish Derby to give the master trainer a historic fifthconsecutive victory in the Curragh Classic.
Johnny Murtagh's "tough decision" to keep the faith in the Prix du Jockey Club flop was vindicated as the Totesport.com Dante Stakes winner, sent off the 7-2 second favourite behind Monterosso, bounced back in style.
Murtagh, too, was bouncing back following a nasty fall in the opening race at the Curragh, in which he suffered cuts and bruises.
The winning jockey said: “I had a lovely run through the race. He travelled very sweetly and he was very brave and tenacious over the last two furlongs.
>
“It was a tough decision, as to which I would ride, and I can’t take a lot of credit for picking Cape Blanco as Aidan suggested to me that he would be the one to ride.”
Connections mentioned the Betfair-sponsored King George at Ascot as the next possible target, which sets up a fascinating rematch with Workforce, who Cape Blanco defeated in the Derby trial at York.
Celebrating an eighth success in the Irish Derby, O'Brien said: "I’m delighted - it was brilliant. Johnny gave him a brilliant ride. He showed today he's the type of horse we thought he was and we'll sit down and think seriously about the King George.
"That last day was a blip and we cannot understand why. He wasn’t the horse we know in France, but he’s left that behind him."
William Hill have priced up a King George match bet, going 4-9 Workforce and 13-8 Cape Blanco.
Jeremy Noseda's Formosina broke the extraordinary stranglehold of Aidan O'Brien in the Ladbrokes.com Railway Stakes at the Curragh.
O'Brien had won the previous five runnings of the Group Two race and struck 11 times in all through the likes of George Washington and Rock Of Gibraltar, accounting for Samuel Morse being sent off the 5-2 favourite.
Samuel Morse did absolutely nothing wrong here as he jostled for the lead with Clondinnery, but he was unable to contain the late charge of Formosina (7-2) and Ryan Moore and had to surrender by just a short-head. Clondinnery was a further neck behind.
Formosina finished third to the Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit on his debut before streaking clear at Doncaster, and this success came as no surprise to Noseda.
'He was travelling well and it was just a question of whether Ryan would get the run, but he picked up well,' said the Newmarket trainer.
'I was happy with him at Newbury - he was behind possibly the best two-year-old we have seen this season - and he has improved.
'I thought of this race so I watched the Irish two-year-olds at Royal Ascot, and I thought he deserved the chance.
'I am sure he will get seven furlongs and I had the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in my mind before this.'
Johnny Murtagh had a very lucky escape in the opener when Petronius Maximus was involved in a freak incident.
Murtagh was still travelling well in the Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises EBF Maiden when his mount suddenly seemed to lose his action and crashed into the rails.
But Petronius Maximus (5-4 favourite) got up and cantered away while Murtagh managed to rise to his feet and walked back to the weighing room with O'Brien.
They had been challenging Michael Cleere on Sydney Harbour (4-1), who were left alone and finished two lengths clear.
Winning trainer David Wachman said: 'Michael thought he had Johnny covered - as he would!
'He's a grand little horse and he could run in all those Group races - he's well entered-up. He just didn't get enough cover the last day.'
Murtagh showed he had suffered no ill-effects when making all on O'Brien's Emperor Claudius (2-1 favourite) to hold Gold Bubbles in the Woodies D.I.Y Celebration Stakes.
British sprinters tend to have the edge over their Irish rivals and overseas raiders filled the first five places in the Dubai Duty Free Sapphire Stakes.
The winner Glamorous Spirit (16-1), who was punched home half a length clear of Reverence, brought about several landmarks for Welsh trainer Ron Harris, who had also saddled the unplaced Judge 'N Jury.
Next home were Elnawin, Piccadilly Filly and Spin Cycle.
'That's my first Group winner and my first winner in Ireland,' revealed Harris.
'She's a very quick filly - she'd be unbeatable if there were races over four and a half furlongs.
'This is down to the owners, who own both horses. Glamorous Spirit was going to run in a Listed race at Chester in two weeks and Judge 'N Jury was coming here, but the ground went against Judge 'N Jury and the owner said we should run them both.
'She'll still run at Chester, the track would suit her better.'
There was further British cheer in the Dubai Duty Free Double Millionaire Handicap through Sea Lord (4-1).
Frankie Dettori rode his rivals to sleep with a stop-start pace and had too many guns for Scandal Sheet.
Trainer Mark Johnston said: 'He won twice and went to Royal Ascot, where he never really got a run and was boxed-in. He showed today what he can do from the front.'
Invincible Ash stormed up the stands rail to claim the National Lottery Sweepstakes Race (Premier Handicap).
The Michael Halford-trained five-year-old was an armchair ride for Gary Carroll, coming right away for a five-length victory over the aptly-named Brushed Aside.
Hawkeyethenoo, the 5-2 favourite, was third with fellow British raider Novellen Lad fourth.
Halford said: 'Six furlongs is probably her trip and we'll look for a Group Three for her.'
Johnston, who had to settle for fourth in the Irish Derby with Monterosso, doubled up when Bay Willow (3-1) ran out the four-and-a-half-length winner of the concluding Dubai Tennis Championship EBF Handicap under Joe Fanning.
